The Altstadt is Zurich's historic core, with narrow lanes, medieval buildings and squares on both banks of the river Limmat. At its centre rises the Lindenhof hill, once a Roman fort and today a viewpoint over the city. The area contains many of the city's landmarks, churches and cafés.
