Freising Cathedral (Freisinger Dom)

Landmarks · Freising

The Cathedral of St Mary and St Corbinian on the Domberg hill is a Romanesque basilica begun in 1159; around 1724 the brothers Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin Asam redecorated its interior in lavish Rococo style. The Romanesque crypt holds the famous “Beast Column” (Bestiensäule) from the 12th century and the shrine of St Corbinian, and in 1951 Joseph Ratzinger, the later Pope Benedict XVI, was ordained a priest here.
